ChuteSide

For contract dairy hoof trimmers

Hoof trimming software for dairy trimmers: every cow, every claw, every farm visit

ChuteSide is hoof trimming software for professional dairy hoof trimmers that records every cow's trim, lesion and block at each farm visit, keeps each cow's hoof history by ear tag or barn number, and lets the dairy's herd manager and herd vet see the records without installing an app.

14 days free, no card. Works in any phone browser.

Hoof trimming recording sheets, the old way

The paper trim sheet works at the chute. It fails everywhere after.

  1. The trim sheet is written at the chute with dirty gloves and typed up at night, or never typed at all, so a cow's history across visits is lost.

  2. On the next visit you can't quickly see that 2147 had a sole ulcer on the left hind last time and still has a block on.

  3. With two or three chutes on the road, each trimmer's notes stay in their own notebook and you can't see what was done at which farm.

  4. The herd manager keeps the lame-cow list on a whiteboard in the parlor or sends it by text, and half of it never reaches you.

  5. The herd vet asks for lesion counts by farm and visit, and you build them by hand from paper.

Every cow's hoof history

Before she's in the chute, see what cow 2147 had last time

Each cow keeps every trim, lesion and block across every visit, found by her ear tag or barn number. A block still on, or a recheck you asked for, puts her on the next visit's list.

A trim sheet built for fast entry

Cow by cow on your phone, or the whole paper sheet in one grid

Where there is signal, record each cow as she comes out: type the number, tap the legs, pick the lesion and block, save. In a barn with no signal, keep the paper sheet and type the visit up at the end of the day in one grid, a row per cow, saved together. A number that isn't on the farm yet becomes a new cow.

Every visit adds up its own cows handled, lesions found and blocks applied, and the farm's visit history exports to a spreadsheet any time.

The lesions on the sheet

  • Digital dermatitis (hairy heel wart)
  • Sole ulcer
  • Toe ulcer
  • White line disease
  • Heel erosion
  • Foot rot (interdigital phlegmon)
  • Corn (interdigital hyperplasia)
  • Sole hemorrhage
  • Thin sole
  • Axial wall crack
  • Horizontal fissure
  • Corkscrew claw

Plus leg (LF, RF, LH, RH) and claw, severity 1 to 3, a second lesion, wood, rubber or foam blocks and plastic shoes, wraps, topicals, locomotion score 1 to 5 and a recheck box.

Logins and plans

Four logins, and what each one sees

Owner

Every plan

Adds farms and imports each herd's cow list, trims, invites the crew and the dairy's people, and sees every farm, visit and record.

Hired trimmer

Crew and Herd Health

Sees only the farms you assign them. Starts visits, records trims, adds cows by number and marks flags handled. Can't delete anything.

Farm manager

Every plan

The dairy's herd manager or owner. Reads their own farm's cows, visits and trim records, and flags lame cows or blocks to check before your next visit.

Herd vet

Every plan

Read-only: lesion counts per visit and each cow's history on the farms they're linked to. One on Solo, three on Crew, as many as you need on Herd Health.

Pay for the chutes you run, not the cows you trim

Unlimited farms, cows and farm manager logins on every plan, plus the trim sheet, cow history, flags, cow list import and CSV export. 14 days free with no card; if you stop, your records stay readable.

Questions trimmers ask

Hoof trimming program questions

What is hoof trimming software?

Software that replaces the paper hoof trimming recording sheet: for each cow at each visit it keeps the legs trimmed, the lesion and claw, the block or wrap applied and whether she needs a recheck, then builds each cow's history and each farm's visit history from those records. ChuteSide is built for contract trimmers who visit many dairies, not for a single dairy's own herd software.

Is there a cow hoof trimming app I can use on my phone?

ChuteSide runs in any phone or tablet browser, so there is nothing to install. It needs a connection to save, so in a barn with no signal most trimmers keep the paper sheet at the chute and type the visit into the grid afterwards, many cows to a screen.

What goes on a hoof trimming recording sheet?

Cow number, which legs were trimmed, the lesion found and on which leg and claw (sole ulcer, digital dermatitis, white line disease, toe ulcer, heel erosion, foot rot and others), the severity, any block, wrap or topical treatment, a locomotion score if you score, and whether she should be rechecked. ChuteSide's trim sheet has every one of those fields, plus a second lesion and a free note.

Can the dairy see the records without me sending a spreadsheet?

Yes. Invite the herd manager as a farm manager and link them to their farm. They see that farm's cows, visits and trim records, can export the trim history, and can flag a lame cow or a block to check before your next visit. They can't change your records.

How do I get a herd's cow numbers in?

Import a CSV of cow numbers (with pen, lactation and status if you have them) from the farm's herd software or your own spreadsheet, or skip it: a cow number that isn't on the farm yet is added the first time you record her.

How does this compare with Cownt and other hoof trimming programs?

Cownt is a native app with voice entry and a free farmer portal, at $39.99 a month. ChuteSide is a cheaper web app with no install, logins for hired trimmers that see only their assigned farms, lame-cow flags the farm raises, and a read-only herd vet login on every plan. If you want voice entry or offline use at the chute, Cownt is the better fit.

What to do before the next chute day

Open your trim book free
  1. Step 1: Add the dairy with its herd size and how often you visit.
  2. Step 2: Import its cow numbers from a spreadsheet, or let them come in as you trim.
  3. Step 3: Start the visit and record each cow, or type up the paper sheet in the grid that evening.
  4. Step 4: Invite the herd manager, so the blocked cows and rechecks are on their screen, not a whiteboard.
